The REAL reason most rangers aren't picked is because they are too versatile with builds, thus the leader doesn't know what type of ranger he is. In general, rangers can be:
trappers
spikers (in many variatons)
interrupters
DoT'ers
I don't believe rangers suck at all, but from my experience, most rangers don't even take advantage of Expetise, why is that??

I went full expertise and marksmanship once and the damage i could kick out from spamming CONSTANT +DMG shots was great...even without preparations (although i could have used RTW).
Troll unguent and preparations/traps/DoT are more favourable to spamming constant shots because you can never guarantee the level of competence from your monk/s (unless of course you know the monk/s well).

i think order of pain is bugged, i doesnt seem to work for my necro, or at least when it comes to his summons, but anyways, it is hard to find groups as a ranger
the people who form the groups dont know what kind of ranger you are, and it takes too long to explain your strat and your bow to the ignorant, people who dont want you, you dont want them

I agrre with rangers being hard to play right. I sucked for the first 2 months i had the game because my first character was a ranger. Now that I am better, i own with him.

I go farming with one other monk and we normally take a ele and a warrior with us, warrior takes all the damage and deals some, ele casting over him and us sitting back watching the show with the odd heal.
We don't take a ranger simply because of the tactic we use doesn't require one same for mesmers and necros, i'm sure it's the same for many groups some class will be left out as they are not needed for the style of play for the area and group.
I have nothing against rangers, i have one myself just happen not to need one for SF.

I now know how you feel.... upshot of that is, now I know how to beat Dunes with Henchies... with my previous characters (nuker, necro, and yes... ranger) I got picked early.
Regarding my ranger in SF... I know the deal of sitting and waiting... bored of playing your ele you've played for-ever.... no one clicks on you.
"Barrage Ranger LFG anything..." *crickets*
But load up my necro and boom, in a group... sad really, I like the ranger for a change of pace, and he poisions too

Exactly, that's why most ppl choose warrs, eles and monks, because:
Warrior= dmg deal with (insert weapon of choice here)
Ele= AoE from (insert magic of choice here)
Monk= 1 for heal 1for prot

Well, time to lower the boom with an idea nobody has mentioned yet, although I'm sure everyone has already thought of it: rangers as stance tanks! I farmed FA with Makkert, and once we got into a group where nobody left and the necro didn't rush, we farmed FA like it was our job.

Very nicely stated pagan. My ranger has major damage potential(I usually go with a high damage dealing build) in pvp and pve, but he also can provide great support from any secondary my group needs.

Lately, people that have been sticking closely to this typical build set up are dying quickly because of their ele due to the new upgrades and eles being unable to understand the concept of firestorm=running enemy. Personally, anywhere that an ele could go, I would find a ranger to go instead and that includes SF.
And as for the comment that it takes too long to explain what type of ranger you are, that is complete hogwash. Most people have taken the time to learn what the different type of necros, eles, and monks are. It wouldn't take that long to learn what different combos of rangers there are. People write off rangers probably because they tried one and couldn't get past pre-searing with it.

Ranger's are awesome in SF, because of interrupting. Stops a lot of annoying spells from being cast, and makes killing Monk bosses as easy as shooting fish in a barrel.

With Barrage and full AP on my Marksmanship I am a full-time nuker, dealing -60 every two seconds to every monster in a group. You'd have to be crazy not to want that power on a farming trip.

Our guild has been using Rangers for some time now. They are very usefull. That and a good Tank it is fun to play. As a Monk...my life is a whole lot easier with good Rangers and at least one good Tank.

[QUOTE=Frost]Well, imo rangers just don't do as well in pve compare to necros and nukers.
There are few hundred or thousands of players running SF each day, if rangers are as good, why are thousands of players neglecting them... unless you are saying thousand of players are no good...
QUOTE]
Yes a thousand players are no good. This does not only apply to rangers - it applies to mesmers and non-mm necros as well. Even if we can prove that we can deal more dmg than the ele, people still dun take us.

I would love to have a ranger on my team.
I usually try to form this.
1. W/Mo tank
2. N/Mo Minion Master, Fiends only, bring a well of profane, BiP/Spiteful
3. A bow ranger with favorable and winnowing and barrage as their elite. Both damage dealers will benefit from these spirits and the fiends damage is just insane.
4. Monk Healer/Smite
5. Prot
Unfortunately, I have trouble finding people willing to give this a try and if they do, they leave too soon. Spread the word! I just find Elementalist pugs more trouble than their worth (a big portion of them). They will get angry if they die and their AoE just sends the mobs in different directions and sometimes ends up in a wipe. And big surprise, the elementalist will be the one that leaves the game before he spams "noobs, why did you let me die."
